Shadow Goes “Outside”

DJ Shadow: The Outsider
Next week, the new DJ Shadow album drops into stores. Called “The Outsider,” it’s his first proper album since 2002’s “The Private Press.” There’s been buzz on the net that the new album is a departure from his ususal sound. Well, the buzz seems to be right. If the four tracks posted on his MySpace page are any real indication … I might just have to skip this one. And, that makes me sad ’cause I loves me some DJ Shadow.

Shadow Goes “Outside”

“Let’s show her what we can do.”

Nick is the hottest boy in school and you have landed him. He used to date the rich and pretty Wendy, but now he’s with you. Life really couldn’t be much better. But, wait! The senior prom is here and you just know she is gonna make a move on your man. She’s told you as much already.

“It’s not who you go with, honey. It’s who takes you home.”

And now, here she is … having just walked in the door looking like a woman on a mission in that low-cut, red sequin dress. You just gotta put that bitch in her place and let her know who Nick really belongs to!

Yeah. I am a wee bit obsessed with this …

“Let’s show her what we can do.”

“Everything is All Right!”

Jamie Lee and Casey shake their groove thangs!
1980. The days of disco were numbered. But disco didn’t die before it could be used prominently in one of my favorite guilty pleasure films … “Prom Night!” It’s fairly straight forward slasher territory and one of Jamie Lee Cutis’s four “Scream Queen” movies.

“A masked killer stalks four teens responsible for the accidential death of a child six years earlier at their high school’s senior prom.

Key words there are “senior” and “prom.” And it’s a senior prom filled with disco and disco dancing. The center piece of the film is when Jamie Lee and Casey Stevens perform an extended disco dance to show all the kids just who the hottest couple if school is. It rocks! Sadly, the soundtrack to “Prom Night” was only ever released in Japan on vinyl in a very limited quantity. It’s nearly impossible to find … but thanks to the glory of the internet, here are two cuts from the soundtrack. They are not the greatest quality, but that’s a whole beggars/chooser discussion.

“It’s not who you go with, honey. It’s who takes you home.”

Hells yeah.

Mid-Week Mystery

What I really want to know is who’s leaving Til Tuesday’s “Voices Carry” on my answering machine. Yesterday makes twice in the past six months.

I’m in the dark, I’d like to read his mind
But I’m frightened of the things I might find
Oh, there must be something he’s thinking of
To tear him away
When I tell him that I’m falling in love
Why does he say

Hush, hush
Keep it down now …

Duran Duran Video Album
Duran Duran Video Album
Back in the good ole days of 1983, Duran Duran (at the true height of their fame) released a “video album.” The band was one of the first to really use the music video to its fullest potential and probably the first to do videos for songs that would never see a “single” release. I love this video set. Each track is edited to blend seamlessly with the next for one hour of Duran Duran video heaven. Most of the videos included here are on the dvd release “Greatest” but four (“Careless Memories,” “My Own Way,” “Lonely In Your Nightmare” and “(Waiting for the) Nighboat”) were not included for some reason. Maybe because they were never released as singles. The video has been long OOP and really is a “must have” for Duran Duran fans.

Video Track Listing:

  1. “Rio” (Antigua) (5:02)
  2. “Planet Earth” (St. John’s Wood) (3:49)
  3. “Lonely in your Nightmare” [US Album Remix] (London/Sri Lanka) (4:49)
  4. “Careless Memories” (Soho) (3:40)
  5. “My Own Way” [Day Version] (St. Johns Wood) (3:33)
  6. “Hungry Like the Wolf” (Sri Lanka) (3:37)
  7. “(Waiting for the) Nighboat” (Antigua) (5:11)
  8. “Girls on Film (Night Version)” (Shepperton Studios) (6:11)
  9. “Save a Prayer” (Sri Lanka) (6:03)
  10. “The Chauffeur” (London) (4:57)
  11. “Is There Something I Should Know?” (London) (4:25)
