INLAND EMPIRE: Some Thoughts

INLAND EMPIRE
Franke and I went on Friday night and submerged ourselves for three hours in David Lynch’s mind fuck of a movie “INLAND EMPIRE.” I have my own theory as to what the movie *might* be about but I do think that a second viewing would be necessary to hash it all out. For those causal Lynch fans out there that think “Eraserhead” and “Lost Highway” are too confusing, you never need to see this film. It seems to make no sense at all. Through the course of the “story” there are plot points and images that want to connect themes and ideas. But do they? Are we even supposed to make sense of the entire thing? Maybe it’s not a movie at all but truly “art on film?” Whatever the merits of the movie are, it’s a love/hate affair. The last time I saw lots of people leave a movie was when we went to see David Cronenberg’s “Crash.” Even the self-proclaimed “hard-core Lynch fan” in front of us only made though two hours before leaving. Franke has suggested that the film needs to be seen again in an environment where it can be discussed while it’s running. I would have to agree with that idea.

  2. I must’ve tripped an HTML thing-y, ’cause my actual comment got cut off … It was, basically, “thank you for that warning.”

I did, however, pick up the Twin Peaks Season 2 box set on the way home from work tonight. We love street-date-jumpin Kim’s Video. 🙂
