Last night was the 60th Annual Tony Awards which celebrates the biggest and best of Broadway … and it was one of the most boring awards shows ever. This year’s Tony broadcast rivaled the Oscars for sheer and utter tediousness. I mean, c’mon! Who better to “stage” an awards show than people who work on the stage. There was so much missing this year … from actually having a host (Hugh Jackman, we miss you!) to move things along to clips from the nominated plays. Plus, the more interesting areas of costume, set and lighting design were totally breezed by in like two seconds. Instead we were treated to lots of “history” of the Tony’s, really long and boring acceptance speeches and some fairly uninteresting performances from the nominated musicals. Alan Cumming might be totally hot but that segment from “Three Penny Opera” sure didn’t make me want to see it. Ditto for … well, all the other muscials. I was really disappointed by the “Sweeney Todd” segment as they showed nothing that would indicate just how cool and innovative that production is supposed to be. Boo, on you Tony! Broadway deserves better service than you gave it this year. Next year you need to bring back Hugh Jackman to host, do better musical segments, show us clips from those nominated plays and treat the production end (set/light/costume designers) of Broadway with the respect it deserves.~
