“Ages of experience have taught us that the commitment of a husband and wife to love and to serve one another promotes the welfare of children and the stability of society,” Bush said in his Saturday radio address. “Government, by recognizing and protecting marriage, serves the interests of all.”
Ah, the Gay Marriage debate is back in full swing just in time to get out the vote for November. There is so much that disgusts and disturbs me about this whole thing … more than I would ever want to get into here because I have some Republican friends that would never speak to me again if I went off on a true rant about this.
What I think would interesting to see (since Republicans are always talking how we gays are destroying families and very fabric of society) would be rates or stats on the following subjects which pertain to that sacred institution of Male/Female Marriage:
1. Divorce
2. Adultery
3. Multiple Marriages
4. Children Abused/Neglected
5. Children in Foster Homes
6. Children Given up for Adoption
7. Pre-Teen Pregnancy
8. STD’s
Not so long ago, inter-racial marriage was outlawed and the same doomsday arguments were used to warn the masses of the “abomination de jour”. Gay marriage can only strengthen the institution, since any right won after a hard fight is more precious than one granted without a struggle. If they want to protect marriage; make it harder for EVERYONE to get married, and tougher still to get divorced!
Something not lost on me, being one half an inter-racial marriage to a woman who herself is the product of an inter-racial marriage. Being that her parents were married in ’68 or ’69, they’ve got all sorts of lovely stories about family members being actively hostile at the prospect and not being served at lunch counters in Minnesota because they were together.
Hmmm…over 35 years later and they’re still married. Imagine that.
Don’t stop your ranting on MY account, please……
I’ll still love you. (Or do you have OTHER Republican friends who aren’t as open-minded as I am??)
republican friends?????
i wouldn’t want to comment on folks i dont know – BUT — even if you disagree about stuff, are they really freinds if staing your opinion would actually end your freindship??? are they really not friends, or are you selling them short, not giving them enuf credit?
if i were a republican, and heard this Bush speech about the gays (again) i would be offended at his total lack of prioritizing REAL issues – the inflated deficit, the price of gas, real pay and real support for troops during and more so AFTER their service, etc etc etc…. demonizing gays may be fun, but it does nothing for my wallet or my children’s future
