Finally, one of my favorite films from the 90’s is getting the dvd treatment it deserves! Peter Jackson’s “The Frighteners” was released in 1996 and died a horrible death at the box office. Why, you might ask? The film was originally slated for a Fall/Halloween release date, but the film came in on time/under budget and was liked enough by the studio to “reward” it by bumping it into the summer release schedule. Bad news. “The Frighteners” opened one week after “Independence Day” and was ignored because of it.
Back in the heyday of LaserDiscs, Universal released a Signature Collection Edition of “The Frighteners” featuring (what is termed) a Director’s Fun Cut, Commentary by Peter Jackson and a 4-1/2 hour Making Of Documentary. Needless to say, this version of the movie has been near impossible to find since LaserDiscs are way out of fashion now.
Thankfully, Peter Jackson has become a Hollywood “it boy” and “The Frighteners” is getting a much needed re-release on dvd. Looks like the the new double-sided release is gonna contain all the Signature Collection LaserDisc features. Plus, it sports the original poster art which I have always considered to be one of the better movie posters ever made. Whoo-freakin’-Hoo!!!! See you at the store on November 29th!
