OMG … Blood!!!

There Will Be Blood
OMG! How stoked am I that the new Paul Thomas Anderson film “There Will Be Blood” is gonna be here soon? I am VERY stoked! P.T. Anderson’s previous films (“Hard Eight,” “Boogie Nights,” “Magnolia” and “Punch-Drunk Love”) are all favorites of mine. “There Will be Blood” is an adaptation of the Upton Sinclair novel “Oil!”. It’s going to be very interesting to see him tackle a period piece. You can watch the trailer for “There Will Be Blood” here.

Robert Altman Dead at 81

Robert Altman, the caustic and irreverent satirist behind “M-A-S-H,” “Nashville” and “The Player” who made a career out of bucking Hollywood management and story conventions, died at a Los Angeles Hospital, his production company said Tuesday. He was 81.

The director died Monday night, Joshua Astrachan, a producer at Altman’s Sandcastle 5 Productions in New York City, told The Associated Press.

The cause of death wasn’t disclosed. A news release was expected later in the day, Astrachan said.

A five-time Academy Award nominee for best director, most recently for 2001’s “Gosford Park,” he finally won a lifetime achievement Oscar in 2006.

“No other filmmaker has gotten a better shake than I have,” Altman said while accepting the award. “I’m very fortunate in my career. I’ve never had to direct a film I didn’t choose or develop. My love for filmmaking has given me an entree to the world and to the human condition.”

I can’t even begin to tell you how sad this makes me …

“Our Town” for Our Times

Dogville
Since I couldn’t cast my show last night, I watched “Dogville” instead. And I really, really liked it. So many things worked for me … the “staging” of the movie to be more like a theater piece than a conventional movie … the excellent cast of actors and actresses … the very downbeat tone of the story. “Dogville” is also further proof that Nicole Kidman is more than just a pretty face and is one of the better actresses working in Hollywood (yeah, fuck you Julia Roberts, you hack). Now, I just need a region free player so I can get the Danish 2-Disc DVD release which contains a load of extras including a “making of” documentary. The Amercian release is sadly lacking in the “extras” area.

The Master of Suspense

Finally Universal will be releasing an affordable collection of their catalog of Hitchcock films. Previously these titles were collected in “The Best of Hitchcock: Volume I” and “The Best of Hitchcock: Volume II” which retailed (togther) for about $300.00 … or you could hunt ’em out seperately for anywhere from $14.99 to $29.99 each depending upon which movie you were after.

Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection
Hot off the presses… Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection for release on October 4th. The fifteen (!) disc set will include the current special editions of “Saboteur,” “Shadow of a Doubt,” “Rope,” “Rear Window,” “The Trouble With Harry,” “The Man Who Knew Too Much,” “Vertigo,” “Psycho,” “The Birds,” “Marnie,” “Torn Curtain,” “Topaz,” “Frenzy” and “Family Plot,” along with an exclusive bonus disc with special features TBA. The set is rounded out with a collectible Hitchcock book. Retail is $119.98.

George Lucas … Shit Listed

George Lucas … you are now on my shit list:
Of course, the big question mark amongst fans has always been whether Lucas would allow the original, unaltered original editions of the trilogy to also be released on DVD. Not possible, said Ward, who confirmed that the upcoming set will feature only the 1997 Special Edition versions of each film. “What George did in 1997,” Ward explains, “was [to] make the movie he originally wanted to make.”

And with that statement, my desire to own the original Star Wars films on dvd just died. I want the films that I watched as a kid not those beefed up versions that have very questionable additions/changes. Grrr! With the potential for the original film versions to never be seen on video again, OriginalTrilogy.com is hosting an online petition to hopefully let Lucas and LucasFilms know that the fans want the original versions on dvd. Go. Sign. Now!
