Roger Deakins had better fucking win this year!
Movies
Another Movie!

I *finally* got to see The Shape of Water this week. I really liked it. It has great acting in an engaging “adult fairy tale” story with fantastic direction and production design. A minor quibble would be Michael Shannon as the villain. He’s fine in the role, but Shannon has played LOTS of villains and it just seemed like more of the same. Past that, I was totally enthralled by this movie and even got teary-eyed at the end.
My bet is that The Shape of Water will take home Best Picture in a few weeks at the Oscars. I am still rooting for Three Billboard Outside Ebbing, Missouri to win (because it’s great and was filmed locally!) … but I don’t think it will win because of the bad buzz surrounding the character of Dixon.
Weekend of Moovies
Not a whole lot went on this weekend … other than lots of movies (not all of which I am going to talk about)!

I finally got to see Strike a Pose, the 2016 “where-are-they-now” documentary about the backup dancers that were featured on Madonna‘s Blonde Ambition Tour (and documentary Truth or Dare). As a young, closeted gay man, Truth or Dare (and the dancers) made a big impression on me. It was great (and sometimes heartbreaking) to see what where life has taken those dancers. I recommend this for fans of Madonna and Truth or Dare.

I was expecting Only the Brave to sledgehammer you with sentimentality. But it didn’t. This movie tells a compelling and tragic story without getting overly manipulative. Yeah. I knew what was going to happen and I still cried at the end.

I saw Black Panther yesterday. It’s a pretty good comic book movie. While not the best Marvel movie, it’s certainly near the top of the list. The best part, for me, were all the kick ass female characters. I could watch a whole movie of just Nakia, Okoye. and Shuri. They rocked!
And, I got to spend $$ on a new power adapted for my Macbook Pro. Something tells me that I shouldn’t be using the old one. Yikes!

I Won! I Won!

In some better news … I have won one of Daniel Danger‘s limited edition Winchester posters from /Film. How cool is that? I have been hearing that the movie is not all that great, but this poster is super duper badass.
Out Next Week!
Holy crap! The new Criterion Collection edition of The Silence of the Lambs is a thing of beauty. *drools*
Pics were shamelessly stolen from the CriterionFourm.org Facebook Page.
Mondo Arrival!

This beauty arrived on Wednesday. It’s the Mondo triple vinyl release of Aimee Mann‘s songs for and Jon Brion‘s score to Paul Thomas Anderson‘s criminally underappreciated film, Magnolia (1999)! I, of course, bought the color variant pressed on Sky Blue, Cloudy Blue (Chance of Rain), and Translucent Gold.
Snubbed?

It’s been interesting to see the outcry on the internet about Wonder Woman and its (supposed) Oscar nomination snubs. I like the movie. LIKE. When I went to see it at the movie theater, I enjoyed it but had some issues with the story (why is this set in WWI and not WWII?) and execution (oh hey, yet another generic, video game-esque CGI battle/climax). Gal Gadot is fine and Patty Jenkin‘s direction of the movie is fine too. FINE, not exceptional. There are certainly much better comic book movies out there (The Dark Knight and Captain America: The Winter Soldier to name a couple). I don’t think that Wonder Woman deserves a less of a critical eye because it’s the best of the (arguably) lackluster DC Extended Universe movies. Which means that I don’t think Wonder Woman rises to the level of being nominated for top honors at the Oscars.
Busy (Doing Nothing)
Actually … the weekend was kinda busy.
David and I binged watched the new season of Grace and Frankie on Netflix. I do like the show … and I think we can all agree that Ethan Embry is totally adorable.

Saturday, we went to Asheville and saw separate movies. Paul Thomas Anderson‘s Phantom Thread FINALLY opened here and it was amazing.

We stopped at Diamond Brand after the movie(s), and I picked up a new water reservoir for my new pack. New hiking gear is always fun to get!
I went down to self-serve karaoke at Harmons’ Den Bistro on Saturday night because Kiki commanded that I be there. It was pretty fun singing 80’s new wave (my specialty).
PT, Stephanie and I went on a wee hike on Sunday. It was somewhat fun, but the ice on the trail made it less so. Fortunately, nobody broke anything.

I have been fighting being in a funk since Sunday afternoon. It’s another one of those “everything is fucked up and won’t get better” kind of things. Ugh. Right now, the funk is winning.

I finally watched John Frankenheimer‘s Seconds. Rock Hudson does some damn fine acting and that ending is a gut punch. This one is going to stick with me for a long time.
Here’s the theatrical trailer …
Star Was: The Last Jedi [Quickie Thoughts]

We saw Star Wars: The Last Jedi on Monday night. I liked it … with a few caveats.
I liked that The Last Jedi has a more complex take on the characters. It’s not all “black and white,” as characters variously struggle with loss of faith in themselves, fear about how their actions have affected and will affect future events (for the worse), issues about trust, and issues about ego and hubris. There are lots of shades of grey. I would argue that The Last Jedi is a directly informed by the self-obsessed/Trump-ian times we live in.
The action in this movie is really well done. The centerpiece lightsaber fight is spectacular and quite possibly the best one in the series. AND .. there’s a moment involving Vice Admiral Holdo that is visually the coolest thing I have seen on a movie screen all year.
And, yes. There were some things I didn’t like. There’s a moment involving Leia that comes out of nowhere and is very “WTF?!” that I still haven’t quite wrapped my head around. Maybe it was more execution that made it weird. Finn’s subplot seemed a little like a detour just to give the character something to do. I understand what they were going for, it just seemed to eat up a lot of screen time for the “message” that results from it. The first moments with Luke in the movie is problematic in the way it is staged. Again, I understand what is being gone for but the execution robs this moment of any gravitas. It plays like a cheap joke (and maybe that is what they were going for).
Past that, I think The Last Jedi is pretty damn solid.
It’s been interesting to see fan reaction to this movie. The way some people are reacting, you would think Rian Johnson had personally murdered their mother. It’s all about subverted expectations. I guess I am a little less invested since years of abuse by George Lucas have somewhat deadened my excitement for all things Star Wars. Personally, I was happy to see Johnson do something unexpected with the story/characters. Otherwise, The Last Jedi would just be a retread of themes we have already seen in (at least six) other Star Wars movies.
And now … my (self-obsessed) ranking of the Star Wars movies.
1. The Empire Strikes Back
2. A New Hope | Rogue One
3, The Force Awakens | The Last Jedi
4. Return of the Jedi
5. The Phantom Menace | Attack of the Clones | Revenge of the Sith
A Quickie … Update
Here are some quickie highlights from Thanksgiving weekend (with a photo or two).
– I made the yearly batch of egg nog. It’s going to be oh-so-fucking tasty!

– After a promise to myself to not overeat on Thursday … I FAILED. Major fatness ensued.
– Black Friday Deals, B&N Criterion Sale, and general movie purchases added up pretty quickly. Must. Stop. Buying. Movies!

– As you might have guessed from the above photo, I was bad and upgraded to a 4K UHD Blu-ray Player (for half off). Damn you, Best Buy Black Friday Sale!

– I hiked with Kat and her Walking Buddy up to Chestnut Bald. The view never gets old.

– Most importantly, my copy of the Mondo Exclusive Edition of Infection at Outpost 31 arrived. Now, I just need to find 2-6 people to come over and play it.

Rampant Consumerism Update

Guess who is stupid excited that Criterion will be releasing Night of the Living Dead and (finally) re-issuing The Silence of the Lambs. Click them links to see lists of the cool special features. Both will be out on Blu-ray (or DVD) on February 13, 2018!
P.S. I am totally crushing on that Hannibal inspired art for The Silence of the Lambs.
UK Spending Spree

Who can resist awesome Blu-rays from the UK? Especially when they are from such excellent companies as Arrow Video, BFI, Eureka, and Indicator (Powerhouse Films)!
