Movie Roundup

The Disappearance of Alice Creed (2009, UK)
I got this movie off Netflix after reading some good buzz on the web a few weeks ago … and I am glad I did. “The Disappearance of Alice Creed” is a tight little 3-person kidnapping thriller that has more twist and turns than the Tail of the Dragon. I won’t say too much as to not give away this movie’s charms. I’ll just say the acting and top notch and the directing very tight. You should check it out if you like a good thriller.

Black Swan (2010, USA)
I don’t want to say too much about “Black Swan” as this is another movie that is best experienced cold. After winning the lead role in “Swan Lake” is ballet dancer Nina (played with utter precision by Natalie Portman) really being stalked by a jealous rival … or is she slowly loosing her mind from the pressure of having the role of her life? Darren Aronofsky has crafted a dark nightmare that is at times utterly terrifying and utterly beautiful. It’s the best movie of the year. You seriously need to get to the movies and see “Black Swan” right now.

TRON: Legacy (2010, USA)
“Totally Disappointing” would be the two words I would use the describe “TRON: Legacy.” There was so much opportunity to make a fun exciting update of the TRON universe. That never happened. Instead we are saddled with a talk heavy CGI film … and it’s not even talk heavy because it’s plot heavy. Actually the plot is paper thin and ultimately makes no sense, so that makes the fact that there’s lots of dialogue and exposition all the more frustrating. Part of me wonders if they wouldn’t have been better off just doing a straight up remake of the original. One the plus side, Daft Punk’s score is cool and the visuals are really sweet. But, that’s just not enough to save “TRON” Legacy” from being a big bore. My advice would be to watch the youtube video for “Derezzed” and you get all the cool shit in 2 minutes as opposed to 2 hours.

Movie Roundup

Dear Fellow Driver

What’s up? I have been meaning to write you for a bit and the past few weeks have made it all too clear that this talk is long overdue.

I am concerned that you soon will be dead from the crazy way you carry on when behind the wheel of your car. I am also concerned you are going to kill me while you are at it. And it’s not just the obvious “you’re talking on your cell while driving” things either.

You’re doing stupid things like tailgating me at 80 mph on the interstate. Seriously. You need to stop this dangerous behavior. You’re also riding right up on my ass before you pass me and then cutting right back in front of me when you get past. Remember that thing called “Safe Following Distance” and that thing called “Safe Passing Distance?” Yeah, well … you should because they are handy rules meant to keep you from potentially killing both of us.

The other day, I saw you use an on ramp as a passing lane because the normal traffic was apparently slowing you down too much. Seriously. What could have been so important that you needed to shave 3 seconds off your drive? That day, I wished I was a cop so I could have busted your ass back to the stone ages.

Turn signals are on your car for a reason. Use them!!! This gives us at least some clue what you are doing before you suddenly slam on the brakes and make that unexpected turn.

And speaking of turns … they are TURNS and not CURVES. Curves, for the most part, are gradual and don’t require a lot of steering effort. Turns, on the other hand, are a completely different animal. Please be more conscience of this difference in the future. I know you are just being lazy and not putting that extra bit of effort into your steering. But you need to stop nearly taking the front end of my car off when I am behind the white line at the red light or stopped at a cross street!

Please improve in the various areas that I have mentioned and I am sure we can have a much calmer time together on the road.

Yours truly,
Chas.

Eye Candy Update!

Here’s some people/things I am finding visually stimulating right now.

Colby Keller! I don’t need to say any more than that.

Yep. I have developed a wee crush on Shawn Ashmore (recently seen on “Fringe“).

The kid (Michael Paul Stephenson) from “Troll 2” grew up quite nicely!

I have been watching “Survivorman” via Netflix and discovered Les Stroud.

The 2010 remaster of Nine Inch Nails’ “Pretty Hate Machine” is out this week and Rob Sheridan‘s “reimagined” packaging is quite fantastic.

Tron Legacy” is mere weeks away!

The best and most visually stunning movie of the year, Christopher Nolan’s “Inception,” will be out on Blu-ray in less than two weeks!
