On Saturday, Preston, Tom and I hiked that familiar (and steep) trail to The Pinnacle just outside of Sylva. When we started off it was sunny and warm. We climbed steadily uphill, but as we got closer to the top the clouds rolled in and it became a grey and overcast day. We heard quite a few different birds in the woods including woodpeckers and owls. Pretty sweet. Up top it was cold and windy and it rained a little on us. But you can’t complain too much about all that when you’ve gotten to spend some time out in nature with good friends. You can some more pictures if you jump inside. Friday afternoon, W. and I traveled down to the NC/TN state line and spent the afternoon at Max Patch. After hiking part of the Appalachian Trail through the woods up to the summit, we laid in the grass staring up at the deep blue sky … feeling the sun on our faces. It was a great afternoon getaway.
On Saturday, Preston, Tom and I strapped on out packs and headed up the Sam Branch Cascade. The intention was to make it to the top of that huge rocky outcropping that the trail goes by. After much huffy and puffing (and some serious climbing and scrambling) we made it to the top. There’s a fantastic view from up there. When you look down off the rock and follow Sam Branch up the mountain, you can see that there is a huge waterfall at the very top of the mountain. There’s now talk of going back soon and following the branch up the mountain so that we can see that waterfall up close.

Preston on top of the rock.

Here’s a cautious view of the drop off. You can see Sam Branch way down there.

The hearty adventurers (Preston, Chas., Tom) pose for posterity.

There was a lot of butt sliding on the way back down. Yes … the trail is really that steep.

Tom takes a rest break by the icy waters of Sam Branch.

So, I took a wee road trip this past weekend to High Point to visit W., that cute new fella I have been chasing. Well, actually, I think we have technically been chasing each other. We had a nice time kicking around, eating food, watching movies and playing with his Wii. After the jump you can see some more photos. Continue reading “The Weekend/Photos”

Tools of the trade …

So, “Art” closed it’s run yesterday. Pictured here is the cast:

Two photos, Two New Year’s Eve Parties. Kris and I are doing our best to pose for the local paparazzi … in 2005 and 2006.

So, here are the few (and only) pictures of me on stage for “Orpheus Descending” which we did last November. Does it get any better than flannel, overalls and switchbaldes?

Yeah. So here we are again at the start of another year. The days leading into it were pretty dang hectic with time for a wee bit of fun. Here’s some pictures ’cause everyone loves pictures.
Friday Night:
Anne, Franke, Christy and myself joined up with Mark to celebrate his birthday. We ate a delicious meal at Tupelo Honey. Mmmmmm, Grit Cakes! Then we traveled off to the new Sante Wine Bar ’cause Mark had met the owners and wanted to check it out. Cool place with a nice relaxed vibe (and “no smoking”). We drank champagne and I tried to act a little more “upscale” than I really felt. It was fun.
Saturday:
PT called early as we had talked about doing a hike. I wasn’t feeling 100% but decided that actually getting out of the house would do me some good. We have been toying around with going back to the spot where I lost my nice double-wall, insulated camp mug back in October. You know … just for a laugh to see if we could find it. So, that is where we ended up.

PT on a rest break. This is one steep trail.

This is me on a rest break. Did I mention that the trail is really steep?

Water and woods going up the Casade on Sam Branch.

We cut down by Sam Branch instead of following the proper trail up in an attempt to find my mug. After a bit of dangerous rock climbing (talk about slippery), we ended up on another trail that followed the branch pretty closely. And, low and behold, what was right in the middle of that trail? My nice double-wall, insulated camp mug!!! It was just laying there waiting on us. How cool is that?!?!

Here’s the overcast and misty view from our stopping point.
Sunday/New Year’s Eve:
It was a really messy day here. The rain that had threatened to come all day Saturday showed up with a vengence. It poured all day long and into the evening celebrations. First was the annual theater party and then it was off the Jennifer’s for some proper drinking and partying.

There was a big crowd munching food and hanging out.

This is Steve (our Executive Director) at the start of the annual awards ceremony. The Board of Directors recognizes folks that they feel deserve something special for the work they did that year. Mark and I ended up sharing the “Phil James Spirit Award” because we stepped up at the last minute and rocked the house during the final performance of “The Full Monty.”

A good group of folks were at Jen and Dan’s for some serious partying.
You’ll notice in the top photo that Kat is camera shy.

There was some MagicSing madness as well. I rocked the house singing Duran Duran’s “Rio” (if I do say so myself).

Michelle, Mark and Mary look like they are plotting some evil scheme.
Eh … not really.

Franke spent the evening sipping on some Maker’s Mark. Mmmmm!

It’s post-midnight and you know what that means. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

The sunrise this morning was spectacular. It started off dark and foggy then turned into this dazzling display of reds, blues and violets.
