Discovering that Netflix now has a shipping facility in Asheville which is oh-so-much closer than the one in Greensboro.

Gettin’ Nostalgic
I watched the first disc of the “Dungeons & Dragons” Animated Series from the early 80’s. I must say that it really took me back to my childhood. I thought that it would be a totally fresh and new experience after all these years. But the opening titles took me back to those Saturday mornings in front of the television. It rocks! I can’t wait to see more of Hank and Company as they try and defeat Venger and make it back home.

Busy Tuesday …
Yeah. Busy day but with a *bang* two projects are now totally outta my hair (gotta remember to mark them off the list).
Don’t forget that modern monster movie madness hits dvd next week with the release of “Cloverfield.” Whoo!
Only a tasty barbecue dinner at the best-est barbecue spot will make the day complete.~
Atonement

So, how good is the movie “Atonement?” It is so damn good!!! There is so much that makes this a great movie … acting, pace, tone, costumes, cinematography and Dario Marianelli‘s Oscar winning score. You definitely need to check it out.
I have now seen most of the movies (still need to see “Juno”) that were up for best picture last year. After seeing “No Country For Old Men” I was a bit surprised at it’s sweep of the awards. It’s good but I think the other films were much better on the whole. “There Will Be Blood” is my favorite with “Atonement” coming in a very, very close second.~
Movie Weekend
As with most weekends now-a-days, I watched waaaaaaay entirely too many movies.
In Bruges (2008, At the Movies)
I loved it! It’s extremely funny (in a sick way) and shockingly violent in spots … exactly what you would come to expect from a Martin McDonagh movie. All the actors in the movie give really fine performances … especially Colin Farrell who has now really gained some respect from me as an actor. You should check it out!
Cannibal Holocaust (1980, On DVD)
I am fairly certain that I saw this waaaay back in the high school days. So, I decided to give it another watch and all I can say is “Meh.” The film is still pretty controversial and definitely not for you if you happen to find the actually killing of animals on screen distasteful. All the other gore is pretty much “by the books” ’cause you know they weren’t out there slaughtering the actors. Kinda worth seeing just so you can say you sat through it.
Mala Noche (1985, On DVD)
I have a love/hate relationship with the films of Gus Van Sant. I can put “Mala Noche” in the love category. It’s Gus Van Sant‘s first feature film and deals with one of his standard themes (unrequited homo love). Good performances and gritty black and white photography make this an awesome indie feature from the mid-eighties.
Into the Wild (2007, On DVD)
I have some really mixed feelings about this movie. I really liked it (after all it’s based on one of my favorite books) but I also didn’t like some aspects of it. Emile Hirsch is quite good in the lead part and has a solid cast backing him up as the supporting characters. The major problem I had with the movie is that it sometime visually inconsistent in the style of shots, etc. Personally, I don’t think that you should use fancy camera tricks just for the sake of fancy camera tricks … and that’s how some of the movie felt. It might not bother some folks but it did me.
Monster House (2006, On DVD)
I saw this at the movies and finally picked it up on the cheap yesterday at Best Buy. I re-watched it last night and loved it just as much when I saw it the first time. It’s fun (and kinda scary in spots)!
Beautiful Thing

I am really not a really big fan of gay themed movies … never have been. But I have been wanting to see the movie version “Beautiful Thing.” Steve and I saw the Raleigh Ensemble Players version on stage at Stoneleaf last year and I loved it. So, now I have seen the movie and I can say that I loved it as well.
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

Wow. What a fantastic movie “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford” is. It’s a full on Art House Western. There’s not much action to speak of (in what you would expect from a typical Western). Instead you get a fascinating character study of Jesse James, Robert Ford and some of the later day James Gang members. Brad Pitt, Casey Affleck (man, is he good in this) and the rest of the cast are quite excellent in their roles. The movie is very somber in tone and very flush in visuals. It’s almost like a requiem for the two titular characters. Some might find it slow and boring … but I sure didn’t. Check it out!
Netflix Ratings
Netflix really needs to add a new category to their system of rating movies. They have “Hated It,” “Didn’t Like It,” “Liked It,” Really Liked It” and “Loved It.” I think that a rating between “Didn’t Like It” and “Liked It” is called for. I have received plenty of films that I didn’t like enough to mark “I Like It” but didn’t dislike enough to mark “Didn’t Like It” (case in point would be “Fierce People”). It would great if they had a rating like “50/50” or maybe even something like “Apathetic.”
Fierce People

My obsession with the films of Chris Evans continues with “Fierce People.” Watching you can understand why the movie, which was filmed in 2005, wasn’t released until fall of 2007 (and very limited-ly at that). Supposedly we are to learn about the privileged and the perils of being an outsider in their world. But the movie never really gets to the point of great social commentary or biting satire. It’s all just kinda “Zzzzzzzzzz.” Mr. Evans does all he can do with with the dialogue and role he’s given. That goes for just about all the actors in this totally “ho-hum” movie.
The Nines: Some Thoughts

After the Hitchcock films last night I caught up on some Netflix arrivals. “The Nines” was a movie that piqued my interest when it came out at the movies. Of course, it didn’t play anywhere near here. And I think that’s okay. I would have felt totally suckered if I had dropped $8.00 on this movie. Don’t get me wrong. It’s not *terrible* but it’s far from being *great.* Ryan Reynolds is quite good playing the three different characters that inhabit “The Nines.” Where the trouble comes in is when the movie reaches the end and the big explanation. It degenerates into a sloppy pile of religious hooey. And we all know how much I hate religious hooey …
Ready for the Weekend
The “Twelve Days of Hitchcock” Movie Marathon kicks off tonight at my place. I gotta get by the store and get some popcorn and suitable munchies. Gonna be interesting to see who drops by from some classic movie viewin’.
