David Fincher movies get me all excited. So, when it was announced he was at the helm of the American-ized version of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” I got super excited. I really enjoyed the Swedish film, so I was curious as to what Fincher would do with the material.
Now the results are in theaters and it stacks up well (and sometimes not so well) against the original Swedish film.
For the most part, Fincher’s version works very well. The tone of the movie is very cold, clinical and precise. Fincher seems more interested in presenting the mechanics of the investigation rather than making it a more lurid thriller. It’s kinda like a lighter and more user friendly version of “Zodiac.” Some plot elements from the book that were ditched in the original movie show up here which make a nice addition. All the actor’s are solid and the pacing clicks along fairly well (except for wrapping up all the loose threads at the end). Plus, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross deliver another very interesting soundtrack.
So, does Rooney Mara kick it as Lisbeth Slander? She does and then some. I liked Mara’s take of the character more than Noomi Rapace‘s. It’s more dark, internal and withdrawn.
The major problem with the movie is that it has about five endings. They catch the killer and then there are about four more plot points to resolve which drags out the ending. And the movie is fitted with a bizarre James Bond-esque opening credit sequence. It looks cool and plays under the blasting sounds of “Immigrant Song” (covered by Reznor/Ross/Karen O) … but it doesn’t really serve any other purpose than to look cool.
There are better Fincher films … but, on the whole, “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” worth checking out.

For some crazy reason the local Best Buy has the Blu-ray set of “Doctor Who: The Complete Sixth Series” stickered at $36.99 retail (not the $74.99 retail it should be). SCORE!!!
Recently, I picked up “Deadwood: The Complete Series” on Blu-ray. It’s a fantastic show that died way too soon. Anyone that has seen “Deadwood” knows it’s pretty famous (or infamous) for it’s usage and style of language, both regular and profane. Personally, that’s one of the things I love about the show … that very profane and emotive dialogue. So weighty and fun.
This past week I have been dealing with being ill. I started felling bad Monday night and was in full on fever mode by the end of the day on Tuesday. Fortunately, the fever passed in about 24 hours and now I just have a pesky cough and nuclear green snot running out of my nose.
So, how do “Deadwood: The Complete Series” and “Sick with Fever” go together? I’ll tell you how.
Tuesday night, I was laying in bed trying the get some rest but that damn fever wouldn’t quite let me drift off. I was in that state of being on the verge of sleep and a crazy thought came to me. How cool would it be to spend a week (at the very least) talking and emoting in everyday interactions like the characters on “Deadwood?” Complete with language, of course. It could make for fun and interesting situations. Like when the cashier at McDonald’s pisses you off or your annoyed by the long line at the Post Office. Also fun would be business related discussions with the boss or talks with friends on just about any subject.
At the very least, I think “hooplehead” is going to make it into my everyday conversation … followed quickly by “cocksucker.” Yeah!

David and I ran into Santa unexpectedly last night. He’s a jolly ole fellow … especially after he’s had several glasses or wine.

“Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil” takes the standard horror tropes of Hillbillies and College Kids-in-the-Woods and deliciously turns them on their head. It’s seriously one of the best horror comedies to ever come along (and it’s Canadian too). Loved it!!!

I made eggnog again this year! In a couple of weeks (after it ages just right), I will be able to taste that fattening, alcoholic, topped-with-fresh-grated nutmeg goodness.
But, I gotta say, people who just buy pre-made eggnog (and add rum or whiskey) annoy me. Mom’s Holiday Eggnog recipe is easy to make and tastes so much better than that store bought crap.
Viva La Fresh Holiday Eggnog!
This blog is officially NINE years old!!!
Well … it’s actually it’s over nine years old, having turned nine on November 21st.
I do realize I have been abusing this blog over the last year. But there has been a lot of being busy and a lot of being stressed out to the point of anxiety attacks. Fun times!
So, we’ll see if I can bang out another nine years here.
Thanks to those of you who are still reading!

More information will be revealed on December 2nd about the Trent Reznor/Atticus Ross soundtrack for David Fincher’s new film version of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.” I am super excited about the movie … and the soundtrack as Reznor/Ross did an excellent job with the soundtrack for “The Social Network.” And hopefully we will get some swank new packing design by Rob Sheridan!
